Okay, so this may be a little nerdy, but some products/corporations seem to get out of control with power. I like to keep up on the latest happenings in the computer world and one of the latest security software releases (Norton 360) has been around long enough to stir up some reviews.
About ten years ago, Norton would have been one of only a few anti-virus choices, and rightfully so. It actually protected your PC with little intrusion into your daily life. For the last few years, however, myself and many tech nerd friends have found that removing this horrible piece of crapware from a system would speed it up dramatically. In fact, removing Norton/Symantec from many PCs actually fixed strange issues the users were having. I was hopeful when a few reliable sources mentioned that the new 360 drained far fewer system resources and was less intrusive.
Here is what I found so far…
Lets start with CNET, we have all heard of them. They give the product an excellent 8 out of 10, Editor’s Choice. Fortunately, they like to practice a little democracy and allow users to give their own reviews. What do the users say? They average a 4.2 out of 10 rating. That is with 161 reviews people! Now, I do realize that many consumers are rather lost when it comes to specific details about a product’s function and CNET may have the upper hand in experience. However, a read through this review had me thinking.
Now on to PC Magazine. In the latest “Security Suite Smackdown III” we find another excellent, 4.5 out of 5 review. However, we are again stricken with some nasty users reviews. Most are 1 out of 5. You can see for yourself.
I wasn’t planning on a long rant, but this just has me thinking. How is the corporate world able to push this crap on poor, uneducated users so easily? Wouldn’t one think that a great piece of software would overcome the power of these giants? It really seems to me that this kind of approach has slowed the progress of mankind in a global way. How could so many people (and even techies, mind you) be horrified with this software when the “unbiased” reviewers we trust are completely amazed by it’s performance? I guess money talks…damnit.
